Foreclosure Rescue Scams (cont'd)
A settlement agreement on behalf of a number of victims of Brockton attorney Alec G. Sohmer has been submitted to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for approval. Attorney Sohmer operated a "foreclosure rescue" scheme which resulted in the payment of substantial fees to himself and family members and which ultimately harmed many of the homeowners, some of whom lost their properties. The proposed settlement is with a number of banks and mortgage companies which financed Sohmer's activities, and does not affect claims against Sohmer himself or other responsible parties. Quat Law Offices has been representing a victim who, in fact, lost her home due to the misconduct of Sohmer.
Wolpoff Settles
Two Massachusetts residents, father and son, recently obtained a settlement with a value in excess of $20,000 from the law firm of Wolpoff & Abramson of Rockville, Maryland. The men claimed in their federal lawsuit, brought under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, that Wolpoff improperly sued the father for the son's alleged debt, then attached the son's real estate even though they had not obtained a judgment against him. The men were represented by Attorney Kenneth D. Quat of Quat Law Offices.
